More .45 Colt Stuff

Post by JimT »

I spent some time today loading .45 Colt ammo with my favorite bullet .. the Keith 260 gr. SWC. I cast these with the RCBS mold. I loaded them over 8.0 gr. of Unique.

I have loaded ammo that I either want to test or want to shoot some more of. These are the Lee 225 gr. RN .45 ACP bullet that did pretty well the other day. These are with 8.0 gr. of Green Dot.

I have quite a few of these. I used this bullet in Cowboy Action Shooting. It a 255 gr. RNFP and is loaded over 6.0 gr. of 700X. They are pretty accurate.

I shot this target with the S&W 625 .45 Colt a couple years ago, using the above loads

The last loads are some I don't shoot a lot of anymore. These are the 300 gr. #457191 sized to .452" and loaded over heavy loads of 2400 or H110. They are accurate but I don't like the recoil any more.

I still like the old Colt cartridge. It's a keeper.

Just found a Ideal 452488 185gr SWC mold and a very well made semi pointed GC 250gr mold for 45. Someone sure did the last right! Looks like a 446109.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

The first load I put together when I got my first 45 Colt revolver was a 255 SWC over 8.5 of Unique. I enjoy a little variety these days, sometimes I use 8.5 of either Universal or Power Pistol. They're all good.

With the 225 RN ACP bullet I like 6.6-ish of W231, nice range load and not too spunky for decent DA work.

Jim, that first load (255 gr SWC over 8 gr of Unique) should be good for just about everything.

Yessir. It works quite well and is easy on the gun and shooter.

Jim do you have an article on the differences in long range accuracy between SWC's vs RNFP?
