Texas Levergun and Sixgun get-together.

Post by RKrodle »

What do ya'll think about a get-together around the 2nd or 3rd weekend in October for some shooting and good times? Chad Mathis is going to post up on the single-action forum and we are going to see if we can combine the two forums for a shoot. There has not been a location picked out yet, still in the early planning stages, but we are going to try and find something as centrally located as possible. One of the things we are talking about doing is a blanket shoot. A blanket shoot is where everybody brings something and puts it on a blanket, something shooting related, and who ever wins the contest gets first pick, second place gets second pick, and so on. Everybody gets something. It's based off of the way they did it at the old rendezvous's. There will be short and long range shooting with leverguns and sixguns. This will be open to anyone and everyone who would like to attend. Tell me what you think and please make suggestions on locations and things to do.

Sounds like fun. If the sixguns are limited to single actions, I may have to pull the scope off my Ruger .44 mag because all my other revolvers are DA. Or, maybe there is a better way - I could go buy a new SA.

We're thinking maybe around Waco or somewhere, but nothing for sure yet. With gas prices the way they are we could do some car pooling.

I'd be interested - what kinda thing do you put on the blanket? If this could be a camp-out/shoot that'd be even better. I could bring some Jambalaya.... or something like dat. If somebody's got a propane fryer, I can throw in the fry coating - and maybe we have a $ cont for the protein - chicken - wings? I can do the wing sauce too. Pork chops, catfish - maybe a variety to cover everybody's taste... I volunteer to organize the vittles if you guys want. I'm in the food biz. Breakfast tacos are good too - sausage, cheese and egg in a tortilla - salsa to taste... dang, I'm getting hungry thinking about this.

We've done this kinda thing at Gunsnet several times and it's always a good time. The camp/shoot that is...

Dang-it O.S.O.K. stop that, your making me hungry :D . That does sound like a good idea to me. I've got a couple of dutch ovens that cook pretty good. The stuff for the blanket shoot can be just about anything like, an old holster you don't need anymore, spare bullets, knives, reloading dies, old set of sights, etc.

Yes, I shot at a place in that neck of the woods - they allowed our group to camp too - a range out west of Waco IIRC - I'll go find out where it was and check back...

OK - it's the "Chandler Gun Range" it its just outside of Valley Mills and Waco.

When we were there last time, they allowed bump firing - if anybody likes to do that with their AK or AR... not too many places will allow that.

I would mention gunsnet when contacting them - one of the guys that works there is a member of that board. :)

You might want to check with these folks, too. besides shootin you get a bit of history as well.

http://www.oldfortparker.org/OldPages/home.htm

They hold a monthly CAS match here and it's just east of Waco. The have camping on site with RV hookups. I know they shoot long range from the fort picketts but that's all I know about just what they have available besides the CAS range.

Sounds like fun. If I can get the time off, then I'll let y'all know. For something to put on the blanket, how about a couple of bricks of .22lr? Is that sort of what you have in mind?

I haven't even fired a shot for about 3 months due to work and overtime. This sounds like a great excuse to take some time off and fire a shot or three. On the plus side of that, I get to find out how my new bifocals work for shooting.

Piller, hope you can make it. As for the blanket that would work, or even just one brick, doesn't have to be expensive. I'm trying to get in touch with Brian (BrianSH) from Waco, he shot with us at my place earlier this year, to see if he knows of some places around there we can shoot. Chandlers is booked for both weekends so their out. Haven't had time to contact Old Fort Parker yet.

Dietz Range in New Braunfels does the Central Texas pistol silhouete matches, and there's a BPCR range just outside of Columbus. I've never been to either range, but I'm relatively certain they both have long range set ups (at least 300 yds., maybe farther). I can check with both for their interest if you want.

rimrock, that would be great if you could check, so far I batting 0. I have located a place up by Dallas that I can probably get access to and we can do long range. I going to check it out this weekend, it's on private property and I like that, but it doesn't have any facilities that I'm aware of. What I'm finding with the ranges I've called is that they are have rifle-sight-in those weekends for the opening of deer season.

Now there's another good idea. There are some national forests that we can utilize our public hunting permits in.... Sam Houston being a big one - how's Davy Crocket?

RKrodle- I have not hunted in the Nat. Forest. We drive through it on the way to Kenard (one of the places we hunt) and there are trucks parked on both sides of the roads all the way. Gas prices may change that this year. I just re-read my last post and I misspelled the town I live near, it is Latexo, I have fat fingers  .

O.S.O.K.- I have not spent any time exploring Davey Crockett National Forest, just driven through, but what I have seen, it is thick woods.

A group hunt would be a great time - $40 for a public hunting permit - on top of your reg annual permit - not bad.

We could even schedule a couple of weekends within season... nice to have a group to camp with :)

I believe the Annual Public Hunting Permit is $42.50 now. That gives you access to large portions, but not all, of the National Forest land. You can also apply for a doe permit on the land. The APH permit also covers the type 2 land, state land.

Yep - there's a dove lease nearby - the state has dove leases all over the state - but it does get a lot of traffic. Get there the first few days of season and it's pretty good though.

And even though the hunting is tough on the state lands - unless you really know them, for $43 you can't hardly go wrong. Especially if you've got good company :)

I would enjoy the camping a lot, and if it happens to actually be a go, then I have a small portable generator to power up cell phones and such. I'm not all that sure about getting time off, but if I can I will be glad to be there.

It would sure be nice if we knew where everyone lived. It is hard to plan something like tihs not knowing where the majority of us live. I am just saying that someone could plan this event in west Texas and only 3 or 4 people live out there and 20 or 30 of us live near Dallas.
Maybe if we took a poll as to where the majority of us are at, it might help.
Example, list where you live and your location relative to a major city. In my case I live near Latexo (pop. 292), we are exactly half way between Dallas and Houston and 30 miles east of I-45
