Moose hunt

Post by dkmlever »

I just got back from my bull moose hunt here in CO. I took my Winchester model 71 but the area I ended up seeing a bull was an open sage brush meadow so I used my .338 Win Mag. 37 inch spread a decent shiras moose.

Congrats. Looks like you got him in the shoulder. Moose is one animal that I REALLY want to hunt some day. Now that my mom flipped out on us, Colorado doesn't look to good for me. Nice Moose.

They started the modern moose season about 20 some years ago. IIRC a friend of mine accompanied a friend of his on the first modern day moose hunt in Colorado. That would have been in 1985 I believe. If you want to be in deep trouble, "mistake" a moose for an elk. They are heavily protected in CO and I believe it's a "once in your life time" draw if you get the tag.

Thanks for all the comments. Here in CO you can get only ONE bull tag in your lifetime. It took me 9 years of applying to pull this tag. Knowing it is a once in a lifetime hunt, and only having a 9 day season, you (at least I did) feel a little pressure in shooting the first moose you see. I will say it pays to have a buddy along to help out, unfortunaly my buddy had to leave the next morning so I am glad I had this one come by when he did.
The terrain is interesting, a big bowl of sage that the moose have to cross to get from one drainage to the next. I was lucky to see this guy coming across the sage field at 1 in the afternoon he was about 1 mile from me and I followed him parallel for three full miles as he walked across the sage. I shot him at 2 at about 130 yards +/-. I took 230 pounds of boned out meat to the processor. It took my friend and me five trips to get it all out of the field (four for meat and one for the head and cape). He was just shy of one mile from where the truck was parked.
