Powders recommend are the medium range. Such as 4895, Varget and several others. I believe Hornady reloading manual gives loading data for Garand ammo. The red wax discs or wads appear to be a product called Soft Checks. I have used them to protect soft bullets from powder heat, with mixed results. Ignor the powder if it isn't certain, it makes good fertilizer. ATB

The Parker Hales were built to the original patterns. The long barreled ones use a 1-72 or 1-78 twist. The musketoon used a 1-48 twist, which is more friendly to minie ball, but poorer for shot loads. Have some fun. ATB

I found that adding a bit of garlic to Mac and Cheeze makes a big difference. It seems to add to the cheeze. Doesn't take much, just got enough to let you know it is there. I also found well cooked cabbage mixed in with Mac and Cheeze goes very well together for left overs. ATB

Looks good. Should work well for you. As long as you not using the rod as a ram rod shouldn't be a problem with cross grain which is common in most commercial dowels. Might want to try putting a tail on the ball. Drill a hold in the sprue, put a strip of material(linen or some such) held in place by a wooden plug crimped in by a punch.
