Re: 32 Win pl and cast bullets

Hi- I reload for several 32 Spls (Winchester & Marlin) but I have not used anything lighter than the RCBS 32 170FNGS (which works very well). However, I would not expect any problems with a lighter i.e. shorter , bullet due to the rifling twist. I had a multi cavity (all identical) Accurate Mold...

Re: BLR Qs: light hammer strikes & peep sights

I have a couple of questions for the BLR veterans here. Q2: Initially it shot low. Had to adjust the rear sight all the way to the maximum height to get her sighted in. Measured the front sight and found it to be 0.727" above the barrel. Seems high to me. Light marks indicate front sight has b...

Re: Federal primers

I use them and have no complaints. I do think they are hotter than CCI or WLR (the other makes I use). About 20 + years ago in a .257 Roberts BLR, I experimented changing from CCI200 to Federal primers. The load with CCI primers, although stiff, was not a maximum load either from the Hornady manual ...

Re: Long range 22 LR.......

We just tried this last fall and it was great fun. I have a gong range and the grandkids were hitting the gong at 250 yds. Just estimating, but I think I should fix up some sights for the fun of it. Same thing as my Sharps 45-110 but more for little shoulders. Have any of you done much of this? The...

My son is considering a job in Connecticut. He will have to leave his AR in TX as they are not permitted in that state. I suppose his Win 94 will be a good choice for recreational and serious use up there. What is allowed? the law tells what is not allowed. He has no interest in CC. Any "assau...

Dammit....the local shop has a used one in beautiful shape for $800. To make the decision more difficult, I actually have the funds to buy it. But....I don't NEED it. I don't NEED another hunting rifle. Especially in another brush caliber. I've told myself to save up for one of the new #1's chamber...

What velocity do you want? I would like to load it to full throttle. I should add a little history of this Winchester. I bought it in Hooksett, NH at Riley's about 10 years ago. I went in looking for a .22 to acquire....and instead this one leaped from the rack and demanded that I take it home. I c...

I live in Maine now and it was a lot easier to find a place to shoot in Vermont. There were a lot of ranges given the size of the state and memberships were always as simple as walking into the local gun shop and buying one. The closest range to where I live now is an hour by car and I'm having a t...

Re: Full Length or Neck Size Only?

Hi- Not necessarily a bolt vs lever situation, but I have sometimes experienced difficulties with rotary magazines, such as many Savage 99's or Mannlicher-Schoenauers have. Often the dimension of the shoulder has fire formed to the chamber (perhaps only a few thousandths more than if flr'd) and that...

Re: Paper Patching: Anyone tried it?

I've done it on single shots in 40-65 and 45-70. None of my results were superior to a properly sized/lubed bare bullet. I did have one very successful project with a 7x57 Chilean Mauser. As you may be aware, older 7mm Mausers usually had dimensions considerably greater than today's standard .284. T...

There is NOTHING like one of the original Mannlicher Schoenauer carbines. They are truly made as well as Mercedes would like you to THINK they make their cars!! Re: Is There Any Reason to Buy a 45/70 Marlin Micro-Groove

When it comes to accurately shooting 45/70 plainbase cast bullets , is Ballard Cut rifling really superior to Micro-Grove rifling? If there is a real and significant positive difference, and Marlin is making its 1895 with Ballard rifling, (except for shooting jacketed bullets) is there any reason t...

Mr Miller, May I make a suggestion? I have tried most of the loads that you have listed, using the Bear Creek 180grn bullet, with the exception of the 4320 powder. I experienced bad bore fouling within two or three shots... hopefully your results may differ. I would suggest shooting the unique load...

Re: Heavier than normal subsonic ammo question

In .303brit the 200gr + bullets were very popular for large game. The Enfields had a 1:10 twist so no problems with the bigger pills. For most hunting situations the heavy slugs would hit harder in the 30 bores as long as they are capable of performing at the lower speeds brought about by decreased...

Hi 94-

I don't have a precise answer from experience with a Win 33, but I shoot 180 grain cast bullets in my 300 Svg (the gas checked bases are significantly below the case neck) M99 with no problems whatever (these are my deer hunting load).

You could use cast bullets. I do it with my 33 Win. For a cartridge of this class, you don't really give up much in the performance area.

Re: ??? for those who have broken Lyman receiver sights

I've used a number of the LY 66A/LA sights for a number of years. The only problems I've ever had is once or twice the elevation or windage "click spring" fatiguing or breaking. This can result in the sight coming apart (new springs are available from Lyman for $1 + shipping). A less signi...

I too have a 33 Win 1886. I form brass from 45-70 cases. I first run them through a 40-65 sizer, then run them through a 33 Win sizer (RCBS), cases well lubed, of course. You can skip the 40-65 sizer if one is not available, but you may lose a few more cases, and sizing effort is increased. I anneal...
