Filling the rear tires of my L2800 with methyl alcohol added 800lbs of traction and eliminated any concerns about overloading the front bucket. Don't have to worry about freezing either. No weights to add or remove, no calculations. Helps keep me planted when using the backhoe, also works just fine ...

Sorry for your loss
It is kind of weird to hear that you lost a piece of your past. Kind of shocks old memories to life.
Depression is a brutal enemy that many of us are saddled with. Makes life hard to take. I'm sorry to hear he had it so badly.

Can't say I've noticed a problem getting my head in the right position, but the only scope I've used on a levergun was a shotgun scope on my Marlin Cowboy. The relief was generous, so head position wasn't critical.

Clean the bore and chamber, take apart clean and lube the action. Remove the stock and forearm, remove any rust you find and apply a thin coat of oil (ATF is good). Nothing to be ashamed of! The cardinal rule though, is to never trade a real rifle (aka levergun) for a plastic fantastic EBR. I know next to nothing about the AR15 - m16 platforms. They are handsome in their own way, and fairly light if I recall. Now you owe us a range report! :D

For magnum loads (.357, .41 and .44 mag), I much prefer AA #7 over #9, 2400, or Blue Dot.
Loaded to similar velocities, I get noticeably reduced perceived recoil, and good accuracy.
Blackhawks are not easy on the hands as it is.
