Well, we tried. Good luck to him. He'll be able to miss those critters from a looooong way off at least.

I think at issue here on his rifle/cartridge choice is if the guy can shoot a 338RUM proficiently if he can I don't see an issue?

A 30-06 may have been the answer for him maybe it isn't and you have to admit a 338RUM if you can shoot it accurately/proficiently will definately get the job done with authority.

I have a 280 Rem, 30-06, 300RUM & 2 375RUM's only reason I don't have a 338RUM or Edge is that I have never jumped onto the .338 bore bandwagon even though some of the bullets have a fantastically high ballistic coafficient.

One of his buddies. Sounds like he needs better buddies if you ask me. New shooter and a 338 ultra bruiser magnum. Good combination. Not!

Heh heh heh! Maybe he'll learn but chances are we'll lose a budding shooter due to heavy recoil. I cringe anytime someone talks about starting a new shooter with a heavy recoiling rifle.

I started a new shooter who wanted to hunt deer and elk quite a few years ago with a M70 FW in .308. Now, about a dozen elk and quite a few more deer, he still uses just that old .308 and is ver happy with it.

Wait a minute guys. there is no logic or personal preference
that will outweigh this advantage. I doubt if anyone
here thinks the 300 mag wont do any job required.
Tell him to get a 300 mag and not look back.
Nothing trumps free ammo in a caliber that big.

Gee, I wonder why the "Buddy" was selling such as great rifle. Certainly not to get an even bigger Wonder Mag for deer killing. This is why there are a lot of used 338's for sale at pretty cheap prices.
