BLR's in the Rainforest

Post by CarlsenHighway »

The red stag roar in Fiordland, New Zealand....

I took an old steel receiver BLR in .308 out, with a Weaver 3 x. Next time I will be going with open sights only, constant rain or drizzle and two stags shot at ranges of 6 yards and 12 yards...

The first was a 9 pointer that I roared up (called in)

and the second is a wily 15 pointer that I have been chasing for four years and finally caught up with him when he made a mistake...

Here is the place. I call it the Big Country.

There is nothing better than a lever action for close in bush work, nothing handles better, or faster, and you can cock them silently and swiftly. The BLR is better without a scope and my first experiment with scoping a levergun has had this result. I shot these stags in spite of the scope.

I took the family to NZ for a 3 week driving trip around both islands back in November, '93. I've got to say, you have an absolutely beautiful country there and it's populated by some of the most gracious and friendly people on earth.

Very nice stag and beautiful country.

Thanks for your kind words guys.

Danny - they taste like elk. They are the same species really and interbreed happily with elk. (We have elk here too)

Here in Middle Earth, we don't shoot the rifles, they are just for the cool factor - you wave them a certain way and the stags fall into a deep dark sleep... Only you can't do it with a plastic stock. Just doesn't work.

Great result.

Was your criticism of the scope a result of the wet weather?
Do you use factory irons on your BLR or a substitute- if so, what?

I have a BLR ,308 and live in Australia- I plan on jumping the Tasman for a hunt one day and welcome the knowledge.

While I haven't used a scope in a rainforest, I've used an Aimpoint in the middle of pouring thunderstorms patrolling and checking structures. Same principle applies, only worse cause of the magnification. With the Aimpoint you can at least keep the "blur" on target, but wiping off the lens as much as possible is still best. With a hunting scope you'd be pretty well stuck. Good reason for QD rings that actually hold zero (LaRue Tactical or Badger) and a Picatinny rail on a lot of newer bolt actions with irons.

A Magnificent animal and a beautiful country. In my younger days as a member of the New York Air National Guard I was privileged to visit New Zealand. I will have to say it about the most beautiful place on this planet.......just takes too darn long to get there.

I too have gone to iron sights on my Guide gun...never shot anything over about 50 yards.
