So, does the main charge go into some sort of removable patent breech with an attached nipple?

I have been known to tinker a bit (and I know why a tinker's darn isn't worth much), but as I watch your progress I am amazed. Your level of problem solving ability is waaaay beyond what I would attempt.

Here`s a pic of a loaded cartridge Kirk, the yellow is bore butter and if ya watch close in the video ya can see it come out the barrel.
It`s that or flames i reckon.
Pretty much done for now until the weather cools down some.
Having problems with ignition, gotta strike the cap twice .
Have to pinch them to get them to stay on so maybe thats it. The first strike seats it , does anyone know if different brand caps are better these are CCI`s.

The other thing to consider is that no matter how tightly the "cartridge" fits into the trap door, it is going to flex & float a little, reducing the power of the hammer strike, so maybe a scosch tighter mainspring might be warranted.

But try the Remington #10s first.

Thanks, looked for Rems today but couldn`t find any, will find some eventually.
The hammer spring is pretty stiff, it worked ever time at first but as i shot it the trap door pins got a little more play so i think your right it`s absorbing the shock.
Will tinker with it but to dern hot to mess with now.

The other option, given the loading design, might be to fab up a way to use a 209 in the "cartridge" (maybe with a threaded nut?) and put a "firing pin/hat" on the hammer or something...

I mean, if the thing has a modern safety, why not use a modern cap?

I think they would be to big and i don`t want to change nipples now.
Prob. going to have to find a stifer spring, i tightened up the trap door and still has to hit them twice.
It worked perfect when i put that spring in but maybe it stretched or something.

I found these stuck away and they fit a little better and go off more reliably, don`t make near the bang though.

Those are RWS german made caps 1075 size ... a tad smaller than a number 11 perc cap... High quality and used to be used by many target pistol shooters... They worked good on my TC Runegade and my 1858 Rem repo.. I liked them because they split apart upon firing and didnt get stuck on the nipple... Loads with them chronoed the most consistant.. but always with the lowest velocities...

Thanks, they work pretty good so i`m thinking Rem no. 10 may work ok too.
I tried three in the house without a hitch so thought i`d give a shoot a try for you guys. Sure enough the first one failed.
Anyway here`s a clumsy attempt at a rapid reload, was fun.

Thanks guys, gotta put some kind of shield around the nipple as it spits caps real bad.
Got a couple ideas, can`t put it on the hammer i don`t think.
I should of built one of my own design i think i could of made something better.

This is why you might want to look into musket caps & nipples. Musket Caps don't split like the pistol caps are designed to...

Man Pitchy, that really cool!

Can you just bore the end of the hammer to leave a shield around the cap, like most factory hammers for caps?

No that won`t work no room as the cap sits down inside a hole in the frame.
Fixed it, added a wall around the whole area and extended the safety lever higher.
Looks better imo, beafier.

Did a little shooting, shot nine balls at 30 yards but not that great of groupl, 4-5 inch.
Can`t see the sights good at all on this thing so that`s the biggest problem.
Can`t get a picture up because PB is down for maint.
I want to say again that this build is by no means intructions on how to build a gun. welding a barrel up is not the safest thing to do to begin with.
In fact i`m probably only going to shoot shot in it from now on as the pressures are lower.
This gun was built by me for me and should not be copied in any way, it was more of a novelty project on making a odd and unusual designed gun.
Thanks for all the comments about it pards it was interesting and fun.
