I Called The "Savage Gods" Last Night.....

Post by Sixgun »

and asked them to bring me a toy. So............they stopped over later in the day and asked, "Is this OK?" I said, "Well, I'll let you get by with for the moment. The next time bring me the hang tags and the box." Thats because thats about the only thing this Savage needs. I don't want to talk about the price as it was about the same as filling up the Jeep's gas tank about 8 times. :D The pics show imperfections but I can't see any. I need to take a photography class.

I'm gonna get her out this week and give her a workout with some Lyman 250 grainers. It came with a cheap scope and a box of W-W Silvertips but the scope went real fast. I'll slap on a Leupold 2 X 7 I got laying around.-------Sixgun

Figures. It had to be 284 or 358 and then I saw the slug weight and I just knew it. How is it that Pennsylvania has all of this mint in box stuff lying around. No carry wear on the receiver bottom, all of the case still on the lever, etc, etc.

Thanks guys! :D Sometimes I think the only reason we buy stuff is so we can show it off on the board. This board has cost me and many others here plenty of bucks, but who cares, life is short.

I'll tell you the reason I snagged it besides the $400 price tag. Back in the eighties I had a brand spanking new 99 in 358 to which I shot maybe 20 rounds out of it. In those days, 358's were not on the "crazy list" of so many shooters so when a guy offered me an even trade for a like new Marlin 336 in .219 Zipper, I took it. And every time since then whenever I saw a .358 I cringed and slapped myself in the head. When I saw this one yesterday, I said to myself, "Now, here's one that won't break the bank". :D

Funny thing, the gunshop owner tod me he thinks the buttstock was shortened and a recoil pad added. I said, "yea, thats a shame" But...........I knew better. It was a real-deal Savage buttpad. Same buttpad thats in the pictures on a 60's Gun Digest. Took the pad off and the stock had the factory numbers stamped on the wood.

Well, I'm gonna play now. I'm off this week and plan on spending lots of time at the gunclub getting ready for the 12/21/12 demise of the world. :D ----------------------Mr. Savage

That's a fine looking Savage.

Maybe you got a bargain but the lever looks all rusted to me.

On the one hand there is this rifle and several others Sixgun's unearthed over the years !

But it's been my luck to run across piles of stuff in PA shops that had been handed down over several generations of hard use and these uhm toys had been bubbaized over the years hence no "collector value" . There's a place called "Dugan's Gunshop" in Hughesville that I used to stop by every so often . Hughesville is close to Williamsport . Anyway they had what could have been many fine old Winchesters and Marlin's in their racks , but just about all of them had been F'd with . Adding scopes , drilling tapping , pads etc etc . Last time I went in they had 4 or 5 Winchester 1886's and every one had been messed up in some way or other .

Sweet looking gun! :D and the price  One of my dad's Savages was in 358 and it was one of my favorites until my older brother got hold of it. He still has it and won't give it up :( I miss having that Savage but since I purchased one in 375 Win. about a year ago it's been keeping my mind off it.

I picked her up at a gun shop near Newport, ME. The owner had quite a few Savages there but this one stood out.

I fired it a few times this year and posted a range report back in September. I'm hoping next spring I'll be spending more time at the range and test a few cast loads in her.

Sixgun, what a beautiful rifle you have there.
I must admit that I have never seen a Savage 99 lever action "live" and then of course I have not been shooting one either. I should really love to try a Savage lever action someday in the future.
Thanks for posting!

That is an exceptionally nice Savage 99 you found, Sixgun, and the 358 caliber is rarely seen, at least here in NorCal.

I have never owned a Savage, but a really old 99 with an octagon barrel would make me look twice!

Here we go again with another "LOOK AT ME ,LOOK AT ME" post. Your probably one of the guys who always had the COOL car. You may live in Penn's state of pristine lever guns and pumps. But in Wisconsin we can hunt on Sunday. So there! Sorry that's the best come back I got.

Keep the post coming of your levergun purchases so we live vicariously through your wallet.

The 99 in 358 was toward the top of the list at one time. Never found one in a reasonable price range. My friends Dad bought one new . Said it kicked to much and put it in away and never uses it. But he won't sell it. This reminds me to hit him up again the next time I see him.

I can say that firing the Savage 358 has some what more recoil comparing to my Savage 375 but then again, I haven't tried loading up anything heavier than 235 grain.

Skinny guys (like the front fork on a dirt bike) can often get along with heavy rifles better than big (fat) guys. :D There is a reason these rifles didn't sell well. Six is tough though - no worries!!! :D

Ha! Your right! I had a 1968 RS/SS Camaro with a LT-1 350 in it. The car had the hidaway headlights with a M-21 "Rock Crusher trans. Right after that I snagged a brand new Firebird Trans Am with the high output 400. I had the best looking girlfriend in school too. Married her and my two kids are very successful today.

Always did have cool toys, still do, always will. I don't make no excuses for being smart and knowing how to handle money.----and being responsible-a trait missing in todays generation

BTW, its not how much money you make, but how you manage what you have i.e.---responsibility :D I never made more than 42K in one year. Most likely one of the board members with the lowest yearly income. If you request, I'll e-mail you a copy of my 2011 tax return. :D Have a nice day! :D

6 cyl.??? Whats THAT? Like my guns, I like engines that "start with 4". You know, 400, 427, 428, 454, 40 S&W, 45 auto...............358 Win. :D

BTW. I "hear" that Plymouth 273 was an excellent engine.-----------------Mr. Look At Me. (sounds like an Indian name) :D
