Re: Powder Question
Thanks for the information. I am currently loading 15.5 gr. of 2400 behind a 250 gr. jacketed bullets in my M92. This gives virtually one ragged-hole accuracy at 50 yds. and plenty of thump for the feral hogs it was intended to kill. I wanted a load that, if it somehow got loaded into my Colt New Fr...

Re: Powder Question
I was actually asking the question in reference to 45 Colt data. The Lyman book I have (49th ed.) does recommend 2400 for jacketed bullets but not lead in either the rifle or handgun sections. The Hornady manual (8th ed.) doesn't mention it for either jacketed or cast bullets. The magnums (357, 41, ...

Powder Question
A question on powder selection: I have recently been reading Elmer Keith's Gun Notes, and I noticed something that has me puzzled. Virtually all of Elmer's magnum loads (44, 41, 357) featured 2400 powder, especially with his cast-bullet loads. When I look at modern reloading manuals, if I can find i...

Re: Starting loads versus Max loads?
I have to agree that the number of competent 700 yard "hunters" can probably be counted on your fingers on a worldwide basis. That may take a little definition: I define a hunter as one who doesn't take a shot unless he/she is at least 95% + sure of making a killing shot, and that his bull...

Re: 308 vs 243
Assuming appropriate bullets for both rifles:
- the 243 will kill any deer that walks with good to excellent shot presentation
- the 308 will kill any deer that walks even if the angle is bad.
Other than that, take your pick.

Re: .45 Colt XTP loads
I really like 16.5 gr. 2400 with this bullet for both handgun (NF) and rifle (M92). You can go a lot hotter than that in your gun, but that load does most everything you would want a 45 to do, without recoil becoming noticeable. Accurate in both of my firearms.

Re: "Red dots" on vintage Winchester leverguns
Here's mine, I made it, but haven't even shot the rifle with it on there yet. I had shoulder surgery right after I got it done. I hope to fire off a few in the next few weeks, as I heal enough to do so. It was my left shoulder, but I will still have to shoot RH, to be safe. Here's the link to to th...

"Red dots" on vintage Winchester leverguns
Has any one had any experience mounting one of the new small "red dot" sights on a Winchester (M64, M94, M71, or M86) without putting any new holes in the receiver? My eyes aren't getting any better, and even the aperture sights are getting hard to use, but I don't want to D&T any hole...

I would like to think that I would not yield to the temptation of pharmaceutically enhancing my abilities, but I will never know for sure. Re: Looking for info on where to live in Canada
I travel to Alberta all the time. It is an amazing place in a lot of ways. It is also a very expensive place to live due to the boom caused by the development of the Athabasca oil sands. If you have the right skills you can make enough money to live there, if you don't, you need to pick another prov...

Re: Marksmanship/caliber question
I agree with most of what has been said here. The suggestions about an airgun and/or a 22 rimfire to work on your marksmanship are dead on. Before you do anything else, weigh your 270 and see what you are dealing with. The trend for the last thirty years has been to go to lighter and lighter on gun ...

There are some older Winchester lever actions in the 150 or 250 series you might want to look at. They are non-traditional lever actions, and the stocks will not win any beauty contests, but they are light, accurate, and point well. They also have one of the best lever action triggers I have ever us...

Re: Best semi-auto shotgun
If you want a shotgun that is easy to hit with, I don't believe there has ever been a better balanced, or better pointing autoloader than a Remington 1100. Its only drawback is that you have to regularly clean it. For pure reliability, I suspect you would have to go with one of the recoil-operated s...

My experience with S&B ammunition has been 7x57 with 173 gr. bullets. It shot extremely accurately (about 0.5" at 100 yds.). I only used it on a couple of hogs, worked well. However, when I went to reload the brass, it would not fit my RCBS shell holder. I checked it with every shell holder...

Re: Fact, Or Old Wives Tale??
With some types of "FMJ" bullets this might not be too good an idea. Many FMJ bullets are basically copper cups filled with lead, and the base of the cup forming the nose of the bullet and the open end forming the base. When you start taking metal off the nose, you are basically making a t...

I have some experience with the 28, but in an O/U. The 3/4 oz. payload is very efficient, and standard loads are faster than standard loads for other calibers. If you use it with appropriate shot sizes, it will handle doves, quail, and the like out to 35 yds. Trying to make it into anything else, li...

I have long suspected that computer viruses are communicable. I am now living proof. Recently, I started hanging around this leverguns site, and the next thing I know, serious symptoms have manifested themselves. Sights on 30-30's
I am confused again. I recently bought a Winchester M94 (20" bbl.) and a M64 (24" bbl.), both pre-64 and both in 30-30. So far so good. Quick range trip. Both 30-30's are shooting about 12" high at 100 yds. with the sights at their lowest setting. Just to make sure that it wasn't me, ...

I don't know if any of these cures work for cancer.... My bigger concern is on the quality of the years a lot of these treatments buy you. Re: Anyone hunt with a 24" barrel on a levergun...and why?
I don't have a short-barreled 45 Colt to compare it with, but the Lyman Handbook 49th edition shows a velocity of 1236 fps with a load of 17.5 gr. of 2400 with a 250 jacketed bullet out of a 16 inch Trapper. With 16.5 gr. of 2400 with a 250 gr. jacketed bullet out of my 24" Model 92 I get 1640 ...

Problem with 45 Colt Rifle Load
After several decades (4) of loading ammunition for bolt action rifles, double-action revolvers, and single-action autoloaders, I recently decided to get into some lever actions and single action revolvers. Loading for the 30-30's and 348 went well, then I got into loading for a M92 in 45 Colt. The ...
