Re: Pistol primers OK in 45-70?
I would sure be interested in any experiments using pistol primers and 3031. I use pistol primers with light loads of Unique and they fire fine and are wonderfully accurate in my #1 and '86. Since my heavy hunting load is with 3031, using pistol primers would be handy if they lite the powder well en...

Re: Big cats
Here in WA state we have the same problem as Oregon. New law, lots of kitties running around. I've been stalked once I know about, see cats hiking more often than I'd like. Buy a tag every year. I actually watched a cat stalking a fellow worker once and he saved himself by throwing a 50lb potato sac...

Re: One Bullet, Three Guns, and One Big Pot
The Lyman 429640 (275grs) works well in all 3 if you have any interest in cast bullets. I've used it in all 3 (44 rifle & Pistol and .444 rifle and T/C) since the mould was introduced quite a few years ago. Too bad it has been discontinued but is still available is one looks hard enough. For the...

Re: The 38-55: What can it do?
Hey Bogie35! The 38-55 is my elk rifle for the most part for the last 1/2 dozen years. I shoot a 280gr cast bullet at a bit over 1700fps and last season killed a HUGE bull elk (Roosevelt), hung a bit over 500lbs that I took out in the timber behind the house! I use a Marlin CB and that was the 2nd b...

2X22.... I don't know how those guys handled their meat, but I have hunted in the high mountains of the New Mexico for Elk in the fall of the year and I suspecct their situation was very similiar. The photos in the article showed a camp in the snow. We butched the elk, put the pieces in cheesecloth...

Not to change the subject, much, this is a statement I have always wondered about when I read it in different articles or books..... took a long horseback pack hunting trip in the wilds of BC. The kind of trip I longed for as a kid. There, he and an Army buddy, killed all maner of critters, bear, mo...

I have great luck with Winchester large Pistol primers. But that is behind 11grs of Unique.....
With powders like 3031 just a standard ol' WLR primer.

Re: 35 Rem for Elk??
Nobody mentioned it but the Contender PISTOL shooters used to think the .35 Rem was the bees' knees for elk, from the 14" barrel! Dang, this was like talking to my wife and when I get done, she says 'huh'? Yep. Worked out good. 4 with the 35 if I remember right. Always used the RCBS-35-200 whi...

Re: Reload Review: for .35 REm and .25-35 Cast and/or jacketed
I don't have any 'plinking' loads for the .35. But I have one GREAT load. 200gr Jacketed or the RCBS 35-200 with 37.5grs of H322 will stay inside an inch at 100 yards in most of my .35's, both rifles and T/C's. In the 25-35 I don't have 'plinking' loads there either. But 24grs of 3031 with the 117gr...

Re: 35 Rem for Elk??
Has anyone taken an elk with their 35 Rem? If so how did it work out? Loads? Experiences? Yep. Worked out good. 4 with the 35 if I remember right. Always used the RCBS-35-200 which weighs 214grs ready to shoot and 37.5grs of H322 for 1912fps. One shot apiece, never recovered a bullet. Longest shot ...

Re: OT - . 44 Pistol Home Defense Loading
I just loaded 200 .44 Special rounds with 7.5 gr. Unique under a 250 gr. Keith bullet. I have "a few" .44 Mags loaded with 9 gr. Unique under a 240 gr. swaged HP. I would not hesitate to use these in my house. I know for a fact that they will not leave the house except through a window. 2...

Re: SR 4759
SR4759 is NOT a pistol powder. SR4756 is. 4759 was originally designed as a case filling powder for light loads. It is a WONDERFUL cast bullet powder. My Lyman reloading handbook, 4th Edition, shows a minimum 15.5grs and a maximum of 17.7 with SR4759. Now, for SR4756 there is a minimum of 7 grs for ...

Re: Creating a Personal Challenge for Hunting Season
I"ve done that many times. At one point I took a 20ga O/U, a 44 rifle and pistol out of the safe and hunted 3 years with ONLY those guns. Took every bit of game I usually do, from elk, mule deer, blacktail deer and bear. I tend to take 1 hunting rifle out every year and try and stick with that ...

Re: OT - Do we have any .410 fans out here?
I won't want to bore anyone here but, if One gets a decent gun well stocked in the .410 and shoots it a lot, He can embarrass a lot of shooters with large bore shotguns. and have fun doing it. when a snob throwes his gun in the car and storms off, then You know they hate the .410. :) . Yep! I chalke...

Re: Carrying te same caliber lever and sidearm.
For the 11 months 3 weeks that is it NOT elk season, I can usually be found with a Marlin .44 and a .44 revolver of some sort. I carry 2 loads on my belt for either gun and if I want to pot a grouse or bunny I'll slip a light load in the rifle and make very little noise. Or if I need to shoot someth...
