Re: Looking for Article re. .30-30 vs. Monster Brown Bear

not what you were looking for but in the Book "Last of the Brown Bear Men", the story of Pinnell and Talifson. There is a chapter where one of the guides takes an 11 foot Browine with his 30-30 94 winchester. He later gets a winchester 70 in 375 H+H by the way.

Re: 44 SPECIAL USERS - A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS

I have one of the Smith & Wesson Thunder Ranch models. Other than needing to add a set of target grips and having the fixed sights regulated for a 250 grain bullet at 850fps it is great. I would rather be shooting the 250 grainer at about 900 to 1000 fps.

I am getting good results with winchester cases, a max charge of H4831, CCI large rifle primers and a 180 Grain Sierra gameking. It is a fast accurate load. I have taken 118 whitetails in 119 shots (no misses-- 1 second shot required) with this loading.

Not is single action only and that old-(1958)-- try a $500 to $600 at an Ohio Gun Collector show if original. However, this one's been Bubba-fied. Notice the lack of the color case on the hammer and the bubba trigger stop. This condition--- $300.00 is about right.

Re: A grab bag - M1886, 475 Turnbull, tang sights & cast bullets

I suppose there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 475 turnbull. But if I were going to have Turnbull rechamber an 1886 I would look real hard at the 50-110 or 50 alaskan. Componets are readily available in 50 caliber and my bet is that these two will do more than the 475 chambering.

I would think a browning/winchester 1895 in 30-06 or 270. The winchester carbine I have has a ladder sight marked to 1200 yards. Not that I have a range anywhere long enough to try it out  The 270 or 30-06 shoots plenty flat-- and you can use them new fangled pointy bullets

I hunt Ohio, Pa. and Kentucky for deer. Bear hunting is done in Pa. and I have hunted Idaho.
I have shot 119 deer. Longest shot lasered at 134 yards. Shortest shot 12 feet. Average I would guess at 30 yards.
Longest bear shot 230 yards, shortest 6 feet average 20 yards.

I like rifles better. The said disadvantage of barrel lenght in the woods has never happened to me. With the longer barrel you get better velocity, less recoil from heavier weight and more shots in the tube. Plus they look better
