If you just take one, even with broken bones they can go very far. I shot an Elk once with a Hornady 300 gr spire point from a 375 H&H Mag once, dang hit it in the steaks, it broke the pelvis, crossed through to the shoulder, tumbled down to the elbow, spun it around 180 degrees, but did not kn...

Again I am defering to the lerned on this forum! I have read that this bullet does not have a strong enough jacket for good penitration on Elk like breaking shoulders, have any of you used this for hunting Elk, and how did it work for you? What the others said, I prefer using the Youkon style snow shoes, but those Bearpaws do look good especialy up there with the guns!

In hind sight one of the best guns I have ever owned was a Remington 700 ADL, in 22-250, I wish I would have kept that one, you may just regret letting that one get away...but then again you never owned it long enough to really get to know it.

Boy I don't know I would like to shoot it just to say I had, I was thinking of getting one a couple of years ago, but then I was considering the 45-70 revolver too.
I do think his price is a little high for that, I don't think they where/are that much new, unless the price has gone up...a lot!

I'd love to pick one up save for one little issue, their ammo costs more than it costs me to produce 357mag ammo! 22mag ammo is priced way too high for it's value in comparison to the 22lr in my humble opinion. I understand the issue with lower volume, higher prices but to me it's priced excessivly...

Not caring much for crowds kinda puts a kink in things, several million people a year visit those spots. If I was doing it I would go about the middle of September, at least you wont have the brat kids to put up with and the crowds will be smaller. Beautiful time of the year, usually nice cool weat...

I always get a kick out of those that forget the 45-70 has made its living since 1873 chunkin a 400 gr bullet at 13-1400 fps. If a person uses the original design bullets whether the 400 or the 500 gr versions at the original ballistics, there isn't a critter on this or most any other continent tha...

I also had two 400 gr. factory loads with me, those felt real comfotable :mrgreen: and I had my little Rossi 44 Mag. which felt like a 22 after shooting those reloads :o

Terry, The gun you use is the same gun my son uses when we hunt elk each year. The load we both use (I use an original 1886 ExLwt--sometimes other old Winchesters) for the 45-70 is my own cast NEI 375 gr. gas check bullet in front of 40 gr. of RL-7 for 1700. You shouldn't need a fuse. Smokeless powder burning in the open is almost a non-event. It's when you confine it that it gets interesting. The same cannot be said for BP-entirely different animal.
