I don't think shotgun primers are required for handgun use, but I've heard that you should drill out the flash holes a little bit to keep the primers from backing out and jamming the cylinder. But if you drill out the flash holes, mark those cases and don't use them with full reloads again.

I've had good luck with the Winchesters and Remingtons with plated bullets. I've also had good luck sometimes with the cheap Federal Lightnings. But you can't tell in advance what ammo a particular gun will like, you have to test them and you might be surprised.
