You might consider a 3x9 Nikon Prostaff. I have three of these now and absolutely love em. $150. The optics are the best for the $$ hands down IMHO.

If you really want the higher magnification capability, then I'd look at a Weaver.

I agree with Buffboy. I will add that the trajectory of the 38-55 is much steeper than the 30-30, which means more difficulty in hitting your intended target at 150 and 200 yards will be bit more challenging and knowing the actual yardage will become critical "sooner" than with the 30-30. ...
