Powder confusion - anyone know the differences... Universal
I bought a big jug of powder that says HODGDON UNIVERSAL CLAYS on it. In my load books I see data for UNIVERSAL and data for CLAYS. Then in a friends data book I see UNIVERSAL CLAYS. The data varies quite a bit. Is this 3 different powders or two powders, one of which goes by 2 names? I want to load...

Re: 358 Moose Bullet
I had a 200 gr FTX from the 356 Win expand in a coyote at close range. I've also had them separate jacket and core and have bits and pieces in TX whitetail deer. They worked for those purposes but that makes me skeptical for use on moose. I like the 250 gr Nosler Partition but it is a pointy bullet ...

Everyone is going to have a preference but you KNOW I experiment thoroughly with everything. The AMERICAN BROADHEAD COMPANY "Sonic" is the best. The 100 gr original is my choice but they are all good. They fly exactly like your field tip. They cut on contact with 3 blades that are like lit...

Re: Do you eat 'chucks?
When I was a kid we shot woodchucks at a place called Major Blossom Farms. The owner would skin the 'chucks and drop them in a big vat of boiling water for about 5 minutes. Then he put the whole carcass in a commercial grinder. Once the "chop meat" came out he put it in a dehydrator. What ...

Re: 35/30-30 Input Needed
I sent the whole rifle because Jesse agreed to shoot it to make sure the holes were round (no key-holing) and to check for acceptable accuracy ( we agreed on a certain group size as okay ). Fed Ex will insure it for just about as much as you want to pay for. Long guns come and go here on a weekly ba...

I'd cut the crescent stock to a flat butt and add a recoil pad. Other than that, I could live with it, although not ideal to me.

Re: 35/30-30 Input Needed
I believe the twist rate is 1:14. I discussed it with Jesse and he and I agreed on what would meet my expectations. The 30-30 brass seems to need the most trimming, and sometimes after each firing. 32 Spl, trimmed once prior to initial sizing seems to go 3 or 4 reloads without need for further trimm...

I have one on my Henry lever action. JES did the work and I chose a 3 groove rifling. I have used 30/30, 32 Spl and 38-55 brass. My dies are from Redding and they work great. Trimming the brass is very important. The powder I like is Benchmark with 34 grain being great for about anything 200 grains ...

I owned a 1950 Model 94 Winchester for a while but never shot it. The sights were hard to see on paper targets and the clattering of the lever made me uneasy about the whole thing. I never shot it and gave it to my Dad. I began looking for an 1886 High Grade EL on the internet. There was one in Cupe...

I use front R pocket for a hammerless J-Frame no holster, but that is not my only handgun when I do. If I have a winter jacket I keep it in the R pocket. If you can stand the green/black textured stock, the Savage Hog Hunter comes in 308, threaded, heavy barrel, 20 or 22" and the few I've used were MOA accurate. Smooth action and tang safety too.

Re: Opinion on Ruger M77
There's a couple of things to consider. The early rifles require the saftey to be put "off" in order to open the bolt. Starting in approximately 1981 this was changed and the bolt can be opened with the safety "on" even though it is still a 2 position safety. There was a recall i...

Nice rifles and an interesting event. I enjoy shooting a .50 cal BP rifle I made a few years ago. I typically shoot conical or sabot bullets for ease, but I have recently shot some patched round balls at targets and found it to be really accurate and pretty cool. Nice shooting there.

The Charter Arms have a lifetime warranty. If you send one back for inspection and upgrades, for $45 they will make it perfect. I would suggest something hammerless if you're (or he's) going to throw it in a pocket or glove box.

Great cartridge. The conversion cost $225 from Jesse. Die are Redding custom ordered from Midway and cost $109. 38-55 brass is easiest to form, one pass through dies with never a problem. 32 Special might lose 1 out of 12 pieces due to crushing. New 30-30 is the worst but twice fired or fireformed c...
