Re: OT- Balistics.
Yes Joe, The length of the bullet is over all for his formula including the shape or bearing surface. The calculations are based on the length versus the diameter regardless of bullet shape. I do feel that the shape has got to be a factor because of the center of mass varies with shape. Maybe someon...

OT- Balistics.
A bit OT, but it applies to all firearms. In 1830 an English mathematician (Greenhill) created a table to calculate what the minimum twist (to spin the bullet)) is needed to stabilize a bullet. The table below is only part of his work. The table requires that the bullet length be converted to calibe...

My last couple of postings come from my old loose leaf note book from my Gunsmithing instructor at Lassen Junior College. That is where I received my basic training in 1953-55. Since gunpowder is used in leverguns as well as all others, here's some trivia for your enjoyment. Amaze your friends! We think of gunpowder, cartridges, rifled barrels and other inventions as relatively modern discoveries. Not so. A.D. 846, Black powder formula. 6p. Saltpeter, 2p. Sulphur, and 2p. ...

I found a couple of interesting bits further along in my records from this period to add to the above post. One pertaining to the Jaranese Arisaka military rifles. The early prewar 6.5 and 7.7 MM rifles were proofed to about 75,000 psi. High serial number Springfields, above 800,000 could not be bro...

Firearms Working Pressure
Every once in a while we'll get a question about rifle working pressures. Here is a list from 1952: Winchesters: M. 54/70 is 55,000 psi. M.71 is 45,000 psi. M. 86 is 39,000 psi below ser.# 126,000. M.86 is 45,000 psi above ser.# 126,000. M. 94 is 39,000 psi. M.95 is 45,000 psi. Others: 30/40 Krag is...

The only word of caution is be sure to use modern brass. There is still brass around with the old balloon head case. ONLY use LIGHT loads in this style of brass, or throw it away. And as others said don't hot rod M.73's. The M.92 action is quite strong. I seem to remember over 40,000 PSI working pre...

The way to go may be to buy the gun from wherever you are, and have it sent FFL to FFL in your state. Before you go, check around to see if an FFL holder will give you a copy of his license to take with you. Note: Not all FFL's will do this!

Re: Buying Guns in Cal.(kind of long, sorry)
You are right about a California non FFL holder shipping guns to an (out of state) FFL holder. The problem is most FFL holders will NOT accept guns from non FFL people in California, or any other state. The argument, by the FFL's, is that it opens a door for stolen guns to be moved by potential crim...

Re: 1892 45 Colt/454 Casull
There was a question about different length cartridges feeding in a M.92, or clone. The feeding system does not rely on the OA length of the cartridge as it does in M. 73 and 76, or clone, type actions. The M.92 action uses a lifter system and cartridge stop that is not dependent on OA cartridge len...

Smokeless powder is not black. The black covering was/is graphite, I believe, used to allow the powder to flow more freely for loading.

My best guess would have to be when smokeless cartridges started to replace black powder arms. Re: Rossi's New .30-30? This one Really IS out of left field!
I never understood the revolver/rifle in original guns. The thought of having my arm in line with a GAP between the barrel and cylinder doesn't do it for me. The original colt r/r was not a success. Of course the gaps were probably larger, and black powder was the propellent, but still it's just not...

The M. 95 was chambered in 30/03. You can use 30/06 in it with no problem. The headspace can be an issue. A small amount is acceptable if you reload as the cases will lengthen with moderate loads. I only shoot modest reloads in my 95's but they are fairly strong actions. I see no reason to hot rod l...

Steve that sounds very fair. When I 'smithed buying was 50% of the book adjusted for condition. The commission sales were 25% of sales price. Most folks just sold for cash.
I don't think I ever bought a "hot" gun. But that was 50 years ago, and a lot has changed since then.

First, Take a pencil or dowel and run the fan at it's slowest setting. Gently push the pencil into towards the blade through the guard. Each blade should just touch the pencil. Adjust (bend) the blades so they all just touch. You may find that's all that is necessary to rebalance the fan. Also the b...
